Douglas Fir

Have you ever noticed this — stepping into a room thick with resentment, or sitting through a gathering gone cold, and feeling yourself dim without quite meaning to, as though the atmosphere had quietly swallowed you whole.
We tend to assume that adapting to a place means blending into it. The Douglas Fir suggests another kind of wisdom.
It grows deep in the dense conifer forests of western North America, where logic would expect its scent to be heavy, damp, and close. And yet, remarkably, what greets you in its essential oil is an unexpected sense of sunlight.
It is a scent woven from lemon, grapefruit, and resin — bright, clear, as though it carried its own source of light within it.
The tree teaches us the art of making our own inner weather.
It tells us: you need not be a hostage to your surroundings.
Even when the pressure around you turns low and grey, you need not turn grey with it. Like the Douglas Fir, you can draw nourishment from the ground beneath you and turn it into a light entirely your own, standing tall as the second-tallest tree species in the world. Look closely at its cones — the distinctive bracts reach outward like small hands, staying connected to the world while holding their own shape.
This is not defiance. It is a steady kind of keeping to one's own frequency.
Whatever storms or dim skies move outside, the sky within you can remain clear.
May today's you stay untouched by the gloom around you.
Let your brightness define the space you stand in — and, perhaps, become the light that reaches someone else.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
