There is no need to be whole again, exactly as before.

After carrying a heavy weight in life, do you find yourself fixated on returning to how things were?

As if only full restoration would prove you had truly come through it.

But often, it is that very insistence on forcing yourself back into your original shape that costs the most.

The scent of Sweet Birch opens a small window in that tightness.

At first breath there is a coolness of wintergreen folded through mint, bright and clean, opening the whole chest and the back of the nose at once. Wait a little longer, and underneath, a mellow, woody sweetness slowly rises — the same steadiness you feel deep in winter on a high mountain, drawing in one long breath of cold air, and finding the chest warming quietly once the chill has passed.

This tree grows deep in the Appalachian mountains of North America. Its Latin name, lenta, means pliant. When winter storms press down, other trees hold rigid and snap. Sweet Birch does otherwise — it bends wherever the wind pushes, and lowers itself as far as the snow demands.

Once the ice melts, some Sweet Birches slowly straighten again, while others keep growing skyward along that same curve. The trunk is no longer perfectly upright, yet the branches still reach outward, and when spring comes, new buds still appear.

The curves the storms leave behind were never damage —

they are the trace of how gently you bent your way through. Not unsightly, and nothing to hide.

May you, in this cool and faintly warm woody scent, allow yourself to carry on with the marks of these years still on you.

There is no need to be whole again. It is alright to have bent.

Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
