The English name Rue carries the meaning of regret, yet its Latin name, Ruta, comes from a Greek word meaning to set free. One plant, carrying both regret and release in its two names.

In religious ritual, it was dipped in holy water and sprinkled over people, which is how it came to be called the herb of grace. Grace was never earned by getting everything right — it is what allows you to lay something down even while still carrying regret.
