Allspice

To be broken is to unfold.
There is something very unique about the Allspice seed—it cannot germinate on its own. The seed must first be eaten by a bird. Churned and softened in the digestive tract, its hard outer shell is gradually worn down. Only after it is expelled does it have a chance to grow into a tree in the soil.
When Europeans first brought the seeds back from Jamaica, they planted them countless times, yet not a single one sprouted. They didn't understand that what this seed needed wasn't better soil or more water. What it needed was to be broken down first.
Have you ever had moments like this? Weighed down by work, relationships, expectations, or loss, feeling trapped in a very dark place, unable to move, unable to see a way out. But perhaps, that is exactly the process of the shell being cracked open.
Uncap the bottle, and the scent of Allspice feels exceptionally grounding in the night. First comes the spiciness of clove—direct, clear, without detours. Then the warmth of nutmeg, slowly sinking from your chest, steadily anchoring you. Wait a moment longer, and a slight prickle of black pepper surfaces, carrying an unexpected layer of sweetness. Not a flashy sweetness, but the kind that emanates from fire-roasted wood. Radiant, yet composed. Like a distant bonfire in the night—just knowing it's there is enough.
When the English first smelled this fruit in the 17th century, they thought it resembled clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg all at once, so they named it "Allspice." But it was never a blend. From beginning to end, it is simply a single fruit. A fruit that has been ground down, digested, and broken open. All of its richness grew entirely from within itself.
The things currently crushing you might not be trying to destroy you. Perhaps your shell is just too hard, and it takes a bit of force for what's inside to break through the soil. There is no need to rush to see the sprout tonight. Just let this warm, spicy scent steadily catch you for now. The sprout that is meant to grow will push its way out when the time is right.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
