"There is no need to hurry and open."

Does it feel like everything lately is rushing you? Telling you to be ready, to let people see that you can do it.

But is there a chance that now is simply not the time yet? Opening before you are ready means nothing gets held. One offhand comment shakes you, one small stir outside makes you want to retreat. It is not that you are not enough — the time has just not arrived.

Cape May grows along the coastline of the Western Cape in South Africa. The wind is strong, the soil thin, and often there is nothing underfoot but cracks in rock. Yet it grows precisely out of those narrow fissures, its branches dense, the whole plant hugging the ground, putting all its strength into its roots. It is in no hurry to grow tall, but you cannot pull it out.

Its scent carries the same contrast. The first note is crisp: lemon, a green grassiness, faintly sour, but breathe in a little deeper and underneath rises a peppery warmth, carrying the weight of pine resin and wood. You expect it to stay merely fresh, and it turns out to be far more grounded than that.

Its buds are pink, wrapped tight, still in the shape of preparing. Once they truly open, the petals turn out to be white — clean, with nothing hidden. The pink was never a disguise; it was the colour needed while still preparing. White is simply what shows once it is ready.

Perhaps we are the same. The things that wrap around us, the carefulness, the practiced ease, the pretending everything is fine, none of it is false. It is what the roots need while they are still going down. One day, once the roots run deep enough, the wind will still blow, but you will sway far less. Those protective colours fade away on their own.

Cape May's petals scatter and cover the ground once they fall — locals call it the Confetti Bush. It is in no rush, so even the way it lets go looks like a celebration.

There is no need to hurry and open. The day you do, it will be beautiful to see.

Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
