"A quiet mind cools itself naturally." A phrase heard countless times, easier said than done. Like today, at the height of summer's great heat — the hotter it gets, the more we chase something to cool us down, and the more that chasing seems to leave us restless instead.

In India, Green Vetiver is called Ruh Khus — the soul of vetiver. It lacks the heavy, earthy weight of ordinary vetiver root. The first breath is a fresh, green, earthy note, and only as the breathing lengthens does it quietly unfold its herbal and rooted layers. The overall feeling is a faint coolness, carrying the softness that only comes after rain.

For centuries, people in India have woven vetiver root into screens and hung them across windows, splashing them with water so that hot wind passing through the roots arrives inside the room already cooled.

Perhaps coolness was never something to go searching for. You have simply not stopped for long enough.

Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
