Silver Fir

Refracting your own light.
Have you ever waited so long for an opportunity that you started to wonder whether you simply weren't good enough?
The scent of Silver Fir suits exactly this kind of moment. It opens with a faintly sweet, fruity brightness, before a soft, translucent woodiness slowly rises beneath. With every deep breath, the aroma seems to carry you into a mist-covered coniferous forest, where the surrounding noise falls away and your steps naturally begin to slow.
Its Latin genus name, Abies, means "to rise", while the species name alba means "bright and pure white" — yet long before it ever rises, it spends a long time in the dark. Silver fir saplings are remarkably shade-tolerant, able to lie dormant for decades beneath a dense canopy, growing quietly. Only once a larger tree above finally falls, and light finally breaks through the gap, does it turn toward that light and climb, straight and true.
And its own particular kind of light is hidden on the underside of its needles. When wind moves through the forest, thousands upon thousands of pale-banded undersides flip over all at once, refracting the falling sunlight into a dazzling sheen of silver-white.
It seems to remind us, without a word, that the light of a life is something we refract ourselves. In our lowest moments, we may fall into the habit of letting the outside world judge our worth, believing that only once we are affirmed by others do we truly possess any brilliance. But when the outside world chooses to give us light is as unpredictable as the weather. Yet when the chance finally comes, whether we can hold that light steady and refract it into something moving depends on the experience we've quietly gathered in the dark, and on how well we know ourselves.
May you, in this cool forest light, first take a deep breath — and remember: light may come from outside, but shaping it into something entirely your own has always been within you.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
