Bit by bit, a life can still be lived at full scale.
Cardamom is often called the queen of spices, and one breath of it is enough to know the title is no exaggeration.
It opens bright, lively, and faintly cool, a spice that clears the nose at once. Breathe deeper, and something peppery cuts through the coolness, followed by a thread of buttery sweetness. The whole scent moves like a gust of wind tossing colour into the air — as if the sky were suddenly scattered with points of light. Only then do they settle back down. The spice's warmth, the milkiness, the florals, the woody depth, all land layer by layer, point by point, each one distinct.
It reads like a feast that runs from morning into evening, growing steadier the further it goes. The warmth left underneath is the quiet afterglow that stays once the liveliness has passed. Anyone who has drunk Indian chai will find this familiar — the cracked pod simmered slowly with milk carries exactly this scent.
It never hands over everything at once. Only with a few more breaths do the later layers arrive.
Life's richness is probably much the same. What truly makes it vivid is usually made up of countless small things. Looked at alone, none of them stand out, but together they form a whole field of colour. Some people spend a lifetime placing one dot after another, until those dots, in the end, add up to an entire universe.
So on a day that feels plain, take a deep breath of it instead, and count the small points already around you.
Bit by bit, a life can still be lived at full scale.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
