The kanji characters for "Mint" (薄荷, pronounced Hakka in Japanese) hold a charming local interpretation. Distilling mint requires an enormous amount of branches and leaves. A heavy cartload of foliage goes into the still, yet only a tiny bottle of oil flows out in the end. The "load" (荷) to be transported becomes "thin and light" (薄). This is not the orthodox etymology found in ancient herbal texts, but rather a story passed down by the farmers and distillers who worked with the plant day after day: it is the plant that lightens the cargo. Its very name speaks of lightness.

This process of becoming lighter reminds us how to face the heaviness of life. Much of the weight we carry is, in fact, unnecessary. That extra mental clutter and worry might as well evaporate with this cool breeze. We only need to distill our problems down to their absolute essence, and then resolve them slowly, one by one.
