Passion is good — but it doesn't need to burn itself out.

Being full of passion for something is a wonderful driving force. But left to burn without end, it will eventually burn through everything you have inside.

When we care too much, or want too badly to get something right, it's easy to slip into a state of over-fixation. The mind keeps turning and turning, until the whole head feels tight and swollen. This kind of overload feels like the brain running its own fever, constantly overdrawing on your body and mind.

The English name Feverfew comes from the Latin febrifugia, meaning "fever dispeller" — in Chinese it is sometimes called the "fever-cooling chrysanthemum." Native to Europe, thriving in full sun and dry, sandy soil, it is a herb with a long history: for over two thousand years, tradition held that it was used to bring down fevers, cool the body, and ease headaches.

Its appearance is gentle enough — small white petals around a yellow centre, like a miniature daisy. But its scent is anything but sweet or endearing. What meets you is a sharply penetrating herbal note, as if a handful of fresh wild chrysanthemum and dried grass had been crushed together. As you breathe deeper, that sharpness slowly softens into a faintly tart, cool, grassy feeling.

This scent corresponds neatly to the state it addresses. It draws the overloaded energy pooled at the top of your head back down, letting frozen thoughts start moving again. In moments like this, you often find that many of the fixations you thought were non-negotiable weren't so absolute after all.

There's nothing wrong with passion itself — it simply needs to be paced. Like walking up a mountain: there's no need to keep calculating how much further to the summit. Just see clearly where this one step lands, then take the next one steadily.

Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
