把一件事做到底，就夠了

說起世界上最濃烈的檸檬香氣，許多人直覺會想到檸檬。

但這股氣味最強的來源，是一棵生長在澳洲昆士蘭雨林裡、與檸檬毫無親緣關係的樹——檸檬香桃木。讓我們一聞就能認出「檸檬味」的芳香分子叫作檸檬醛，而在檸檬香桃木的葉片裡，這種分子的含量是目前已知植物中最高的。

初聞是一股宛如檸檬糖與檸檬撻般活潑的甜。明亮、乾淨，沒有果皮那層青澀，只在收尾時留下一抹極輕的綠葉氣息。

一般的植物香氣有幾十甚至上百種成分互相牽扯、層層遞進，於是有了前中後調。而檸檬香桃木的葉片裡，幾乎只有檸檬醛一種成分，沒有百轉千迴的層次，從頭到尾都在說同一句話。開出的乳白色小花也幾乎沒有香氣，整棵樹的力氣，都傾注在葉片裡。正因如此，它的氣味比檸檬本身還要純粹。

我們常常會害怕自己過於「單一」。只擅長一件事，履歷寫不滿一頁，向別人介紹自己時，總覺得要心虛地補上一句「我其實還在學習別的」。窄，好像就等同於淺。

但這棵樹展現的是另一種姿態。無可取代，從來不是因為你甚麼都懂，而是因為在某一件事情上，你走到了別人無法企及的深度。只專注做一件事不是限制，而是清醒地選定了要把自己安放在哪裡。那件你一直在做的事，不必再勉強添加甚麼。把它做到底，就夠了。

Go all the way in one thing.

The strongest lemon smell in the world does not come from a lemon.

It comes from a tree in the subtropical rainforest of Queensland with no citrus anywhere in its family. Lemon myrtle sits with eucalyptus and clove in the myrtle family. The molecule your nose reads as lemon is citral, and no plant we know of holds more of it in its leaves.

You notice that the moment the bottle opens. Lemon sherbet, then lemon tart, bright and clean, with none of the green edge a peel would bring, and a thin leafy note left at the end.

What it does not have is layers. Most plant scents carry dozens of compounds pulling at one another, and that friction is what gives an oil a top, a heart and a base. These leaves hold almost nothing but citral, so there is nothing to unfold. The same sentence, from beginning to end. Even the cream-white flowers are barely scented, the whole tree pouring its work into the leaves. Which is why it smells more purely of lemon than a lemon does.

One-note is not a compliment, in a perfume or in a person. We are quick to apologise for being good at only one thing, for the line we always add about everything else we are still learning. Narrow gets read as shallow.

This tree reads differently. Nothing replaces you because you carried one thing further than anyone else reached. Doing one thing is not a limit. It is a clear decision about where to put yourself.

Go all the way in one thing. That is enough.
