沒有人是誰的替代品

我們或許都曾經歷過，成為那個「補位」的人。

接手了一份別人留下來的工作，或是走進了一段剛剛空出來的關係。我們有時會不自覺地成為那個「補位」的人。做得稱職，別人會欣慰地說你「很像他」；稍有落差，別人又會惋惜地說你「不如他」。

新幾內亞厚桂，也一直處於這種被比較的無奈之中。

在新幾內亞的雨林裡，這種巨木可以長到三十米高。人們將它的樹皮剝下、曬乾、磨成粉，在印尼，它被當作肉桂的替身；而在調香師的手中，這塊樹皮蒸餾出的精油，又成了椰子香氣的代用品。它總是在扮演別人，填補空缺，卻鮮少有人真正記住它原本的名字。

但只要你靜下心來感受，它的香氣根本無法被輕易歸類。

打開瓶蓋，迎面而來的是一股濃郁溫暖的椰糖香，帶著淡淡烘烤感。底蘊滲出乾燥的粉質暖意，還透著一絲獨特的蠟質感。它比肉桂更溫潤，又比椰子多了一份深沉的歷練。

其實在幾百年前，新幾內亞厚桂早就從巴布亞的鳥頭半島被運上船，作為珍貴的物資在群島間交換布匹。它本身就有著無可取代的價值，根本不需要去模仿誰。
人也是一樣。你帶著自己獨特的氣息與經歷走來，本來就不需要去重演別人的劇本。

嘗試慢慢找回自己真實的輪廓。
記住，沒有人該是誰的替代品，你只需做你自己。

Most of us have been the one who filled a gap.

You take over work someone else left behind, or step into a relationship that has only just been vacated. Do it well and people say, fondly, that you remind them of whoever came before. Fall a little short and they say, with regret, that you are not quite him.

Massoia has lived inside that comparison for centuries.

In the rainforests of New Guinea this tree grows to thirty metres. Its bark is stripped, dried and ground to powder, and in Indonesia it stands in for cinnamon. Distilled, that same bark becomes a stand-in for coconut on a perfumer's bench. It is forever playing someone else, forever filling a space, and almost no one remembers the name it began with.

Sit with it quietly, though, and the scent refuses to be filed anywhere.

Open the bottle and warm coconut sugar arrives first, with a faint toasted edge. Underneath, a dry powdery warmth, and a trace of something waxy that belongs to nothing else. It is rounder than cinnamon, and it carries a depth coconut never had.

Centuries ago this bark was already being carried out of the Bird's Head of Papua and traded across the islands for cloth. It was valued in its own right, with no need to imitate anyone.

We are no different. You arrive with your own scent and your own history. You were never meant to perform someone else's script.
Try, slowly, to find the shape of yourself again.

No one should be anyone's substitute. You only have to be you.
