There is more than one way to grow.
Botanists often write a plant's posture into its name. Erecta stands upright. Procumbens lies flat along the ground. Damiana was given the name diffusa — spreading outward.
It grows on the stony slopes of northern Mexico, and it is easy to walk past. Most of these plants reach no higher than your waist, so unless you crouch down, you will probably miss one. What it does instead of climbing is send its branches out along the ground, in every direction, until the whole plant becomes a single wide, low thicket.
That is not how we usually picture growth. We tend to see it as one line going up. One more step, one more rung. Because that rhythm is so familiar, the moment the line slows or stalls we panic, reading it as having stopped growing, or worse, as going backwards.
This plant offers another shape. Growth does not have to keep reaching higher. It can move outward instead, until the ground you are able to stand on is wider than it was before.
The scent carries that same outward warmth. It sits between dry hay and chamomile, opening slowly into something like sun-dried berry skin, with a faint spice left at the end.
Up is not the only direction. When the way is closed above you, sideways is still forward. And once you let yourself spread out and take in what is around you, what you can reach is often more than anything you would have found by climbing.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
