Let your heart thaw.
Sometimes a shell grows over us without our noticing. Little by little we go quiet, and everything seems to reach us from further away. It is easy to decide we have simply turned cold. But much of it is not character at all. Anything soft, left too long in the cold, will set, if only to protect itself.
The black poplar spends every winter this way. Once summer is over, the tree folds next year's leaves into its buds and seals them under a thick, fragrant resin. The colder it gets, the tighter that seal holds, keeping what is alive inside safe from the frost. Only when spring warms the air does the resin soften again, and the scent begins to drift along the riverbanks.
The absolute keeps that temperament even in the bottle. On a cool day it barely moves. You cup the bottle in both hands and let your palms warm it for a while, and slowly it begins to flow.
A scent that asks for that much patience turns out to be a comforting one. A cool green edge of resin first, then honey and soft hay, something like dried apricot, and beneath it the low warmth of cinnamon bark.
When we find the cold in ourselves, we tend to push, to force a change. We forget we could treat ourselves the way we treat this bottle, with a little more kindness and a little more patience. What has set does not need chipping away. It needs warmth.
Held in the palm, the warmth passes little by little into the glass. Whatever has frozen inside will, in time, begin to thaw.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
