Some of us just need different ground.
You have very likely eaten it. In a four-peppercorn mill, among the black and the white, those small round fruits of a bright pink are the berries of the Brazilian pepper tree.
The tree comes from South America. In the nineteenth century, taken with the clusters of red berries it carries through the winter, people brought it to Florida as an ornamental. Nobody foresaw what followed. A hundred years on, its vigour had proved too much: it filled the wetlands and woodlands of the state, crowding the native trees out of the room they needed. Planting one in Florida is now against the law.
The same tree, growing on Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, meets an altogether different fate. When the fruit ripens, it is gathered by hand, cluster by cluster, to become a spice, and to become the oil we are holding here.
The plant itself has changed nothing. The same genes, the same fruit. What changed is the ground it put its roots in.
When we are finding life hard in a place, most of us begin by asking whether we are the one at fault. Yet this sense of not fitting has nothing to do with you. The qualities you carry may look surplus to requirements in one place, and in another turn out to be exactly what has long been wanted there.
The scent carries that same toughness. It opens bright and lively with spice, like peppercorns just crushed between the fingers; beneath it lies the coolness of resin, and at the close a trace of sweetness, faint and near to flowers.
Failing to find your footing in one place does not prove you are not good enough. What it says, perhaps, is only that this is not yet the place for you to stand.
May we all find the ground our roots are suited to.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
