Hold fast, and go with the tide.

Seaweed has no roots.

At its base there is only a disc-shaped structure, called a holdfast.
The one function of that disc is to keep a firm grip on the rock. The nourishment it needs in order to grow is taken up by the frond itself, straight out of the seawater.

For seaweed, holding on to that rock is the one thing in its life it must get right at all costs.
And because that single foothold is secure, it can move with the swell without a second thought.
A wave comes in and the whole frond goes with the water; the wave draws back, and it swings into place again. All of it is soft. Nothing in it is held taut.

Faced with all that shifts in our lives, we tell ourselves more often than not to stand firm, to hold ourselves straight as a tree. Yet when the current runs hard, the more we brace and refuse to yield, the more readily the panic inside us follows the water. We assume we are only safe with everything held in our hands, and forget that softness is at times the better way to survive.

The scent of seaweed absolute is full of the sea as it really is.

It opens with the faint salt of seawater, fresh as the instant an oyster shell is first prised apart. Slowly something deeper seeps through, near to nori and to rope from the seabed, with a touch of damp moss about it. Once the scent is diluted, the green comes up, very like a beach gone quiet after the tide has drawn out.

You need not keep everything in your hands, nor hold a hard line at every moment. Hold on to what matters most; that is enough.
As for the rest, you may let your body go soft and leave it to the water.
