White Sage

Wipe the slate clean.

When we are on edge, or simply worn out, it can feel as though something has settled over us and nothing will lift. Everything gets put off until we are in better form.

The scent of white sage is not something you meet in the open air; it is kept inside the leaf. That silver-white sheen on the surface, seen close up, turns out to be a dense covering of fine hairs, and beneath them sit the oil glands, where the whole of the scent is stored. It grows on the dry slopes of southern California, and you might walk right past a stand of it and catch nothing at all.

Run a fingertip lightly across a leaf, though, and the glands break and the scent comes. Once for each pass; stop your hand and it draws back in, waiting for the next. It has never been particular about the timing.

Dry and keen. It opens with something of a eucalyptus leaf just crushed, a coolness that is very clean, resting on sun-baked hay and a faint thread of camphor wood. It closes neatly, without a trace of sweetness.

The line where things begin again has been in your hands all along.
When you begin is for you to decide. The leaves are still there, the glands beneath the hairs still full, and a finger moves and the scent comes once more.

May this clean, keen scent leave you with this: you can begin at any time, and you can draw a fresh line under the people and the things that are behind you.

Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
