A break is not a wound.
The calamus that grows at the water's edge in the hills of Nepal flowers every year and never sets fruit.
This sterile race first appeared in the Himalaya, and has since followed human footsteps across Europe and Asia. What carries it is not seed, but a rhizome as thick as a finger, kept just beneath the surface of the mud.
Whenever a fast current tears the rhizome apart, or some other force snaps it, the severed length drifts off with the water. Once it settles into mud elsewhere, it takes hold of the earth again and grows into a whole plant.
Its wide range today, you might say, has been drawn by one breaking after another.
Faced with a break, most of us think first of what has been lost.
For calamus, the broken end is no wound. It is where the next plant begins.
The scent of calamus oil carries a certain detached coolness. Dry at first and faintly sharp, with a reserve to it like leather, as though cinnamon bark with all its sweetness taken away. The middle turns slowly to a soft earthiness, and at the close musk and old leather settle in.
Quietly, the scent says this: to be broken is not to be finished.
That severed length has left the place it belonged to, taken hold of the mud elsewhere, and put out leaves of its own. It is no longer anyone's remnant. It is a whole plant.
If your life has lately held some breaking off, and some saying goodbye, remember the calamus. Where a thing has broken may well be where something new begins. Somewhere at the water's edge, right now, a whole calamus is growing out of a place you thought had long since ended.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
