有沒有一樣東西，當你很久沒有聽過它，就把它當成已經失去呢？
檸檬香桃木的葉片看起來全是一樣的，只能摘下來搓開，靠鼻子去認。要找的，是一棵氣味特別的樹。它因為無法靠種子保留這份特殊的香氣，隨著時間流逝，早已消失在世人眼中，只留下半個世紀前的幾頁記錄。
但隔了半個世紀，憑著那幾頁認真記下的文字與氣味特徵，這棵樹竟然被找了回來。
熱情香桃木精油的氣味，前段是明亮的檸檬，但很快就會轉進深沉的木質調裡，尾段隱約透著松脂與玫瑰天竺葵的影子。與尋常直白酸甜的檸檬香不同，它的氣味走到一半，懂得轉身。
「沒有消息」與「消失」之間，隔著的只是有沒有人記得。
記下一件事，原來不只是為了懷念。那些被認真記下來的東西，是後來的人唯一能循著走回去的路。昆士蘭東南那片林子還在，那棵被重新找回來的樹，如今依然開著乳白色的花。

Is there something you have not heard of in so long that you have quietly given it up for lost?
The leaves of a lemon myrtle all look alike. You have to pick one, crush it between your fingers, and tell by the smell. The one to find is a tree whose scent is unlike the rest. That scent cannot be held in a seed, and so, as the years went by, the tree passed out of sight altogether, leaving behind only a few pages set down half a century before.
Yet half a century on, going by those few pages of words and scent notes that someone had taken the care to write, the tree was found after all.
Zest myrtle opens bright with lemon, then turns quite soon into a deeper woodiness, and at the close there is a faint trace of resin and of rose geranium. Unlike the plain, sweet-sharp lemon one usually meets, this scent knows to turn halfway through.
What lies between "no news" and "gone" is only whether someone remembers.
To set a thing down, it turns out, is not only an act of remembrance. What has been carefully written is the one path by which those who come after can find their way back. That forest in south-east Queensland is still there, and the tree that was found again still puts out its creamy white flowers.
If someone or something long out of touch is on your mind today, you might pause a while in the scent.
