The cold need not turn you cold.
Most people who smell Siberian fir for the first time say the same thing: how can it be this sweet?
Siberian fir is the northernmost growing fir in the world. Its range runs from Siberia right up into the Arctic Circle, and at the coldest it has to hold out against minus fifty degrees Celsius.
Of the whole fir family, it is the sweeter-tempered one.
The other firs of the genus all carry a little of that turpentine edge; this one does not. There is a moment at the opening like cold wind driven through the nose, and in an instant you are walking into ice and snow. After that, all of it is sweetness. The feeling is a soft flake of snow melting in the palm of the hand, and the sweetness of that one moment.
Even the needles are soft. The tips are rounded, some of them faintly notched, and they do not prick the hand at all.
Breathing it in, you are gently closed round by a forest under snow, with room to settle and to talk things over with yourself.
Quietly, the scent puts something to us: to meet hard trials with calm and with softness is also a way of getting through. On days that are difficult to bear, we assume we have to be covered in spines before we are safe. Yet to treat everything coldly may only leave things colder, and harder.
May this soft, sweet trace leave you knowing that, having been through the cold, you need not turn sharp or cold yourself. The softness you hold inside is still yours to keep.
Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
