Dune Helichrysum

Nothing to Live Up To

A bunch of dune helichrysum has sat on a shelf for a year, and the colour has barely moved. Good drying, you would think. But it looked exactly like this while it was still out on the sand.

Dune helichrysum grows in the sandy ground along the Mediterranean coast, its leaves under a layer of greyish-white down. What look like petals on the flower head are not petals at all, but whorl upon whorl of dry, papery bracts that were dry from the start. So it goes from full bloom to bone dry with no stretch of slow wilting in between. Withering is a step it never takes.

The scent has the drive of resin about it, dry and faintly peppery, with far less honey than helichrysum usually carries. It does not smell like a flower past its season. It smells like a dry branch just snapped open, sturdy and strong.

Most flowers have a day when they look their best, and after that day it is all downhill. We look at ourselves the same way sometimes, holding a “best self” somewhere in mind — a particular year, or a particular photograph. Once that high point is set, every day after it feels like a slope going down.

Dune helichrysum has no such high point. It never staked itself on the few days when it was at its brightest, so there is not a single day on which it is going downhill.

Nobody would say that dry bunch on the shelf is past its season. It has looked this way from beginning to end, and it still has its scent.

Grounded in the present, spoken through scent.
