We fit where we fall short.
Humans have domesticated rice, coffee, cacao and vanilla, and to this day no one can grow a cep. The reason is not a technical one. It simply will not grow alone.
Before a mushroom breaks the surface, the mycelium hidden below must first wrap itself around the root of a tree and become a mycorrhiza. Within that remarkable pairing, the two sides trade things of quite different kinds: the tree supplies the cep with sugar, and the cep, through its mycelium, supplies the root with the water and minerals it cannot reach. Each makes up for the other the very thing it lacks.
Cepes absolute smells of damp earth and moss. The first impression is the floor of a wood just after rain, with a faint hay sweetness pressed underneath, and deeper still a trace of something close to cocoa and old leather. It is astonishingly strong, and a single drop is already too much. The amount actually used is minute, and that is enough to lift a layer of woodland damp through an entire formula.
In our own relationships we take equality to be the mark of a healthy one: whatever the other person puts in, we feel we must return as much. Between a tree and a cep nothing has ever been measured. What each gives is different in kind, and the amounts cannot be converted one into the other, yet each receives the very thing it most lacked.
There is no need to weigh your own worth against anyone else's. You need only find the one whose lack fits yours.
