Good things happen quietly.
The red-brown earth in the south of New Caledonia carries enough nickel and manganese to kill most plants, and pitifully little phosphorus or calcium. Araucaria grows here, scattered thinly along the watercourses, growing slowly, the tallest of them only four to six metres. It is not the most striking tree on that ground.
The oil is distilled from shavings of the heartwood. At room temperature it will not pour; you have to hold it in your palm a while before it moves.
The scent is light and warm, like tea rose melted into cream, the woody part floating quietly behind. You have to pause while you smell it before it appears.
Perfumers use it as a fixative. Its main constituents are sesquiterpene alcohols of the eudesmol group: heavy molecules, slow to evaporate, and their work in a composition is to hold on to the faster notes around them so that those stay longer. It barely speaks for itself. What it does is keep other scents in place.
In an office, in a family, among a group of friends, there is always someone doing this.
Someone speaks too harshly and they catch it; two people lock up and they say something off the subject; when a person is struggling they quietly hand them a glass of water. Afterwards nobody remembers who did any of it, because at the time it seemed as though nothing had happened. And nothing happening was their doing.
If you are the one quietly holding everyone up, and you have been tired lately, do not tell yourself it counts for nothing. What you do happens to be the kind of thing that disappears when it is done well — but it matters.
