Go where you breathe easier.
You can sometimes tell how good the air is without an instrument. Look at the trees and see whether it is growing there.
Tree moss is not a moss at all but a lichen, a fungus and a green alga living as one body. It has no roots, and no skin holding the outside world apart from it; its whole body is the surface it breathes through, and all its water and nourishment come out of the air.
So it is acutely sensitive to air. Where the pollution is heavy it will not grow, and when you see it hanging on a tree, the air around that place is, as a rule, clean.
Its body works like a recording instrument: the heavy metals it accumulates stand in direct proportion to what is in the air. Whatever it has breathed stays inside it, and it has no way of taking in only the good part.
We are the same.
A relationship, a job, a place you have to go back to every day — we tend to assume that if the will is strong enough we will not be affected. But our bodies and minds are just as honest; telling yourself you are fine does not wipe any of it away.
The scent of tree moss absolute is deep, as though a whole forest had been gathered into one place. Sunlight falls on damp bark and draws the smell of ferns out of it. Warm, sweet, and then slowly closing round you like a length of velvet — inside it is the breathing of the whole forest.
If you have lately felt a weariness you cannot account for, you might pause a while in the scent.
You probably know the answer already, and you have known it for some time. May this deep, quiet forest air leave you knowing that some places wear you down invisibly. It is worth finding yourself better air — even just a little of it.
