You crossed that line long ago.

On the mountains of Europe you will see a line. Below it, forest; above it, no trees. It is not that the slope suddenly goes bare — spruce and larch simply cannot grow past a certain height. The wind is too strong, the season too short, the snow too heavy, and so the whole mountain stops at the same altitude. From the foot of it, looking up, you can see where the edge of the forest is.

Dwarf pine grows above that line.

But the way it manages to grow there is by giving up the shape of a tree. It stands only a metre or two, bowed from the root, its branches travelling not upward but out along the ground, as far as ten metres from the base, with only the tips turning up. When the snow comes down in winter even those tips are pressed flat, and spend the whole winter lying against the ground. What stands upright is broken by the snow; what lies down cannot be broken. It traded itself for a shape the snow cannot break, and that is how it came to hold that ground.

Height was the price. Above the treeline it will never grow into anything you would recognise as a tree.

Its scent is a clean needle note, sweeter than most pines, with something fruity in it, more solid and softer, and a resinous tack underneath. It does not smell of the sharpness of wind at a summit; it smells of foliage close to the ground that has had the sun on it — which is exactly where it grew.

We tend only to count what we have lost: not as tall as our peers, not in the position we ought to be in, looking as though we grew wrong. What we leave out of the count is that where we are standing now, very little grows at all.

That line is real. And you are already above it.
