Noble Fir

Noble fir was first given the botanical name Abies nobilis. Nobilis means noble. Then botanists found that the name had already been given to another fir more than a century earlier, and the rules do not allow it twice. So in 1940 it became Abies procera, which only means tall. The name changed. The tree did not. In English it is still called noble fir.

It is tall — up to seventy metres, the tallest of all the firs — and its needles crowd upward along the branch. Its cones stand straight up in the high crown, up to twenty-two centimetres long, among the largest of any fir, though hardly anyone ever sees them. When they ripen they come apart on the tree, and the seeds drift off on thin wings.

The scent opens bright and fruity, as clear as light coming in. Underneath lies a soft, faintly sweet warmth — clean without being sharp, transparent as crystal. Almost every other fir oil is colourless; this one you can see the colour of, as though even its appearance had to show what it was. Smelling it is like opening a window onto a winter forest: clean, wide, bright, and measured.

We are used to waiting for a sign. For someone to say you did well. For a title. For someone to put a tick beside what we have done, before we dare believe ourselves. We have already come a long way, and still it feels as though it only counts once someone nods, once someone claps.

But how others see you, or what they choose to call you, was never enough to measure what you hold. A name can be taken away and a title can be got wrong, and the noble fir goes on growing — magnificent, its needles thick, its cones heavy, standing in people's homes at Christmas.

Your worth was never anyone's to give.
