Labdanum

You leave more than you remember.

Has this ever happened to you: someone tells you that something you once said has stayed with them all this time. And you have no memory of ever saying it.

This was once how labdanum came to us. The rockrose of the Mediterranean, at the height of summer, puts out a thick sticky resin from its leaves and branches to shield itself. The Spanish call it jara pringosa, the sticky shrub.

Goats graze among those shrubs, and the resin catches, unnoticed, in their beards and on the hair of their legs. The earliest way of gathering labdanum was to comb through a goat's beard, scrape off what had stuck there, and sell it on to traders at the coast. That warm, deep amber note in perfume began exactly there: a shrub that never meant to give anything, and a herd with no idea what it was carrying.

It smells of warm balsam, with a dry sweetness laid over it like a fine layer of dust, and something in it of the quiet of walking into an old house no one has entered for a long time. Leave it a while longer and old leather and dried plum come up from underneath, a sweetness heavy enough to sink. None of that is there at the first breath. It comes out on its own, once you have waited.

We assume easily enough that leaving something behind has to be done on purpose: a letter long enough, or a sentence weighty enough. But what actually stays in another person rarely arrives that way. It is usually some small thing you did in passing, a sentence whose weight you could not hear yourself.

That shrub never produced anything for anyone. It only did what it had to do through the hottest days, and the scent of it became, with no one intending it, a smell a great many people love.

The good you leave, you seldom know about. There is more of you in other people's memory than in your own.
