Pomelo Flower

It comes when you stop forcing it.

Every March in Hanoi, the people selling pomelo blossom never call out. They lay the sprays, cut at first light, on a bamboo tray, or tie them to the back of a bicycle, and then stop at some corner and say nothing more. Everyone who buys has been brought there by the scent. For the way pomelo flower smells, the Vietnamese like one word, thầm, discreet: go looking for it and it slips away; stop paying attention and all at once it has filled the room.

It smells of a thick white-flower sweetness, with honey pressed in underneath and, at the close, a thin coolness like grass snapped in two. A good deal in our own lives runs the same way. A name you cannot retrieve, however long you sit there working at it; you get up to pour a glass of water and it surfaces by itself. Or you want to settle yourself, and the more deliberately you ask for it, the less settled you are.

The pomelo flower is not trying to avoid anyone. It has been there all along; its scent simply needs a gap to come through. Much the same is true of us: when we are braced and holding on too hard, we are packed so full of our own thoughts that there is nowhere to put even the best of things.

If you have been tired lately from chasing an outcome in everything, let this thick, cool white-flower scent sit with you a while. There is no need to push at everything quite so hard.

It is like those flower sellers on a Hanoi street in March, who never press anyone to buy. They simply sit there, letting the wind tell it for them, waiting for whoever is meant to come to make their own way over.
